Chapter 16

“What are you doing here?” he snarled.

“Is this your place?”

“Fuck you.”

“You know you really are a scumbag. How could you do something like that?” And I pointed at the puppies lying in the shade of the hedge. I was too angry to be afraid.

“I’m not doing anything. You’re the one that’s trespassing. You’re the one that’s stealing dogs.”

“So they’re not yours?”

He stepped closer. “I should call the police on you and have you arrested.”

“That’s a laugh.”

He took another step toward me.

“Stop.”

“Why?” And he giggled. “Don’t you want to become better acquainted?”

I reached in my pocket and took out my knife and depressed the lever. There was a satisfying click as the blade sprang out. “Maybe you want to become acquainted with this?”

“Big blade. Very impressive. I like big things.” Davis licked his lips. “Think you got the guts to use it?”

“Why don’t you come closer and find out, asshole?”

“Oh, I’ll come closer all right,” he hissed. “Real close. Close enough to trim those ears of yours.”

“Maybe I’ll be the one to do it to you.”

“I don’t think so.” And he took another step toward me.

As I watched him advance, watched the gleam in his eye I realized that he wasn’t going to leave. He wasn’t going to go away. He was coming for me. Here. In the daylight. And he’d get me. He was stronger and faster and meaner. And there was no one around to help. Even if I screamed it wouldn’t matter. By the time somebody got here it would be too late. Unless I did something first. My hand closed over the knife shaft.

Davis took his time as he came toward me. He wasn’t in any hurry to finish this. He was enjoying himself too much. I stood there waiting for him with my heart pounding and the blood roaring in my ears. Then when he got close enough I reached out and slashed. He jumped back. But not fast enough. A red line appeared across his upper arm. He put his hand over it. Blood seeped through his fingers. He looked down and then looked back at me in surprise.

“Just get out of here,” I said.

He smiled. “Not bad.”

“Leave.” My God, I thought, he’s coming after me again. But he didn’t. Instead he turned to go. He took two steps and stopped. His eyes were cold. The pupils were dilated

“That was fun. We’ll play again.”

“I doubt it.” The blood was still roaring in my ears.

He leered. “You’re going to dream about me tonight. Hot dreams. The kind that burn you up.” And he walked away.

I shivered despite the heat. Jesus, had Davis thrown the Molotov cocktail through my window? I certainly wasn’t going to ask him. George could do that. I gathered up the puppies and ran for the car before Davis could come back. By the time I reached the shop, they had recovered enough to create total pandemonium. When I came through the door with them Zsa Zsa took one look and dove into the dog pack while Pickles jumped on top of the counter.
